Biography
Priscilla Chan, a leading Cantopop performer, attained widespread acclaim across the 1980s, yet her relocation overseas for university studies in the United States caused her audience appeal to shift repeatedly before declining steadily. Born July 28, 1965, in Hong Kong, she entered the recording industry in 1983 at age 18 via the track “Forgotten Promise.” Numerous chart successes followed for the balance of the decade, above all “Thousands of Songs,” featured on the 1989 farewell release Always Be Your Friend. After that project, Chan devoted several years to psychology coursework at Syracuse University. Her return with the 1995 album Welcome Back proved enormously popular, sustaining her appeal for additional seasons. Once the new century arrived, however, a rising cohort of Cantopop artists displaced her visibility.
