Biography
In 2003 Matt Schwartz and Joel Edwards surfaced as Deepest Blue, delivering an anthemic sound tailored for Ibiza clubs that rapidly positioned them as a leading act within British dance music. An Israeli-born violinist steeped in classical technique, Schwartz had relocated to the United Kingdom to pursue music-production studies and had already co-written “Dissolved Girl” for Massive Attack’s Mezzanine, a track later licensed for The Matrix soundtrack. Edwards, an established songwriter who had collaborated with Ed Case, Planet Funk, and Skin, also produced remixes under the Dead Guys alias for Blondie, Chicane, and Texas. A mutual acquaintance brought the pair together; they first experimented under the Zoom name before issuing their debut single, also self-titled, as Deepest Blue on Ministry of Sound Records in 2003. Their first album, Late September, followed the next year and spotlighted three singles: “Give It Away,” which received extensive U.K. airplay, “Is It a Sin,” and “Shooting Star,” subsequently adopted as the theme for Sky Sports News. In 2005 Schwartz and Edwards declared their intention to disband and explore separate careers. Schwartz began releasing material on his own Destined label, while Edwards completed a solo album for Mercury Records that was never issued after the label dropped him. Deepest Blue reconvened in 2007 and returned with the single “Miracle” the following year.
