Def Con Dos, a Spanish rap-metal outfit, first gained attention by performing covers of Public Enemy and Beastie Boys numbers while working Madrid clubs as Freddy Krueger y los Masters del Universo. The group soon cut the demo Primer Asalto, secured a deal with the domestic imprint Dro, and issued Segundo Asalto in February 1990. An early break arrived when the act, also known as DCD, supported Run-D.M.C. on the American group’s Spanish dates. Julian Hernández and J. Al Andalus handled production for the 1994 album Armas Pal Pueblo, a project that also brought guitarists Juanjo Melero (Mala Fe) and Juanjo Pizarro (El Mercenario) into the lineup; the band promoted the record by sharing stages with Lagartija Nick. Kamarada Nikolai joined before the April 1995 release of Alzheimer, after which Argentine guitarist Julián Gautxito took over for Manolo El Guanche and the ensemble supplied the theme for Alex de la Iglesia’s film El Día de la Bestia. A year later the group launched its first European trek, appearing at Printemps de Bourges in France and Dour in Belgium before releasing Ultramenia in September 1996. In 1998 DCD participated in the Warped Tour alongside Bad Religion, Deftones, and Rancid, among others, then put out the studio album De Poca Madre; the following year saw the greatest-hits collection Dogmatofobia.
