Biography
Emerging from Detroit as a soft rock outfit, Gallery revolved around the songwriting, singing, and guitar work of Jim Gold. Bassist and vocalist Dennis Kovarik joined steel guitarist Cal Freeman in the core lineup, and the group landed a deal with Sussex before releasing the 1972 debut Nice to Be With You, co-produced by Dennis Coffey, best known for “Scorpio.” Its gentle title track climbed to the Top Five, while the follow-up singles Mac Davis’ “I Believe in Music” and “Big City Miss Ruth Ann” each landed inside the Top 40. In 1973 the band issued a second album, this time spotlighting Jim Gold’s name on the cover and giving the project an eponymous title; they also converted their roster of session players into a formal unit by adding drummer Danny Brucato and second guitarist Fred DiCenso. No additional hits emerged from that record, and after issuing the standalone single “Love Every Little Thing About You,” Gallery dissolved, allowing Gold to pursue a solo career that yielded two albums by the close of the 1970s.
