Biography
Eclectic duo Gilligan Moss craft kaleidoscopic dance-pop marked by upbeat tempos, funky grooves, and intricately layered rhythms that frame playful yet yearning vocals. The pair have labeled their sound with the loose terms “déance” and “garden-disco,” while pointing to Talking Heads as a central inspiration for both rhythmic drive and lyrics built around distinct characters—a device the duo themselves have employed throughout their work. What began as a solo alias for songwriter Evan yielded the 2015 debut EP Ceremonial; childhood friend Ben later joined, converting the project into a duo.
Evan, raised in Chicago where he first met Ben during preschool, later relocated to New York to pursue music. While holding an intense position as a management consultant, he recorded his initial Gilligan Moss single, “Choreograph.” Early online attention prompted him to abandon the corporate role and focus on production full-time, which in turn opened doors to high-profile remixes for Glass Animals (“Gooey”) and Sia (“Big Girls Cry”). After extended sessions in his home studio, Evan finalized the Ceremonial EP with co-producer Van Rivers (Fever Ray, Glasser, Matthew Dear), who guided creative choices and handled final mixing; AMF Records issued the project in August 2015.
Glass Animals subsequently invited Gilligan Moss on their U.S. tour. Evan recruited Ben to manage live bassline synth duties, and the pair began composing together once the dates concluded, formalizing Gilligan Moss as a duo. In 2016 they delivered remixes for Sebastien Tellier (“La Ritournelle”) and Tegan and Sara (“Boyfriend”) while developing new material in the woodlands of upstate New York. Their second EP, What Happened?, followed in 2018.
