Beginning his beatboxing pursuits in 1992, West Coast rapper Slow Pain aligned himself with the gangsta rap collective Street Mentality, an outfit that later secured a contract through BMG. Alongside LiL-V and Bandit, the group joined Slow Pain for extensive touring in 1993 with Southern Latin hip-hopsters A Lighter Shade of Brown and A.L.T., although the resulting debut release achieved only modest commercial traction. Not long after, Slow Pain teamed with A.L.T. on the single “Coupe de Ville,” an experience that prompted the addition of Kid Frost and the infusion of Latin elements into their gangsta rap approach, giving rise to the ensemble Three Deep even as unforeseen hardship cast a shadow over their prospects.

After finalizing an agreement with Ruthless Records, Three Deep watched their trajectory collapse following the death of fellow West Coast rapper Eazy-E. The loss prompted Slow Pain and A.L.T. to pursue independent paths. In the mid-'90s Slow Pain joined Thump Records and issued The Baby OG, featuring the well-received track “Money Maid.” Entering the new millennium he collaborated with hardcore rapper Too $hort while forming a new collective alongside Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, A.L.T., and O.G.enius under the name the Blvd. Knights. His follow-up album, The Hit List, arrived in March 2000, with Lil' Don Juan and Presents Old Town Gangsters both appearing the next year. Raider 4 Life surfaced in 2003, L.A. Blues in 2004, and In the Hood in 2005.
