The origins of Instruction's intense, loud rock sound lie in the prior involvement of its members with Quicksand and Errortype: 11. Yet the key narrative involves how this group from New York City faced neglect locally before captivating audiences in Britain and ultimately earning favor with Geffen. In 2002, Adam Marino on bass, Ti Krek on drums, and Arty Shepherd handling vocals—all previously of Errortype: 11—joined forces with Tom Capone, the guitarist formerly from Quicksand. Although local buzz was building gradually in their hometown, the pace of progress felt insufficient to the band. Shepherd, burdened by his extensive experience, felt particular urgency, believing the raw, energetic outfit needed to achieve success promptly or else he would "pull out the stool" and "turn into Paul Weller." Such remarks helped win over the British media after the band traveled to the U.K. in 2003 under Shepherd's direction. He anticipated quicker dissemination of their reputation due to the compact size of the U.K., a prediction that proved accurate. Following the April release of The Great EP via the independent Gravity label, a tour across the U.K. alongside Funeral for a Friend, and the appearance of Shepherd's sharp, profanity-laden conversations in numerous publications, the group garnered substantial backing from British fans and press. Stateside, the declaration of Instruction as "rising stars" by the key metal publication Kerrang! drew Geffen's attention. The label inked a deal with the band, paired them with renowned producer Bob Ezrin, and put out their first album, God Doesn't Care, during August of 2004.
