Originally hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, the multifaceted songwriter, singer, and producer Janine Foster first shared her atmospherically soulful material with listeners via the stage name Janine and the Mixtape. After releasing multiple singles and EPs under that banner, she shed the “mixtape” tag, shifting both her sonic approach and visual presentation toward a sleeker iteration simply called Janine. Her final project under the earlier moniker, the XX EP, appeared via the major imprint Atlantic Records in 2015.

Relocating to Brooklyn, she cultivated an online following by regularly posting short video clips that ranged from early glimpses of upcoming tracks and standalone covers to casual reflections on daily life. Maintaining steady visibility, she previewed her first album with a joint cut alongside Marko Penn and, in March 2017, unveiled a video for the brooding, tension-filled opening single “Don't Love Me.” The complete studio effort, 99, followed the next year on Atlantic.
