Atlanta rapper and singer Kodie Shane built her early momentum through an upbeat outlook and vibrant presence, securing her first major platform as the only woman in Lil Yachty’s Sailing Team. Born Kodie Williams and raised in Chicago, she came from a household steeped in music: her father, Danny C. Williams, formed one-third of the Detroit trio Rick, Ran & Dan; her aunt is Cherrelle, known for the hit “I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On”; her sister is Brandi Williams of Blaque; and her mother serves as her manager. Her grandfather chose her name in tribute to Buffalo Bill Cody, whose frontier boldness distinguished her once she began rapping and producing at fourteen. While working in the studio she encountered Coach K, whose clients include Gucci Mane and Migos, and he arranged an introduction to Lil Yachty at the start of 2016. Their immediate rapport led Yachty to bring her into the crew. Following the arrival of her debut mixtape 2060 and her initial EP Little Rocket, she joined the Sailing Team track “All In,” which surfaced in summer 2016 on Yachty’s Summer Songs 2. The standout verse broadened her reach and streaming numbers. Her introspective single “Sad” marked her first commercial breakthrough; the Yachty collaboration on the Zero Gravity EP amassed close to two million streams and secured her a contract with Epic Records. Early in 2017 she released the atmospheric mixtape Big Trouble in Little Jupiter, weaving in R&B textures reminiscent of her chief influence Ashanti while highlighting her singing. Her debut album Young HeartThrob appeared in 2018 and featured the song “Flex on Me” with TK Kravitz.
