Jean Dawson fuses hip-hop, trap, and experimental indie rock into a lyrical, hypnotic style all his own. He first drew broad attention via the 2019 EP Bad Sports, then swiftly delivered his debut full-length Pixel Bath in 2020. The follow-up Chaos Now* surfaced in 2022, with Glimmer of God arriving two years later.

Dawson entered the world in San Diego yet spent his formative years across the border in Tijuana, Mexico, within a biracial Black and Mexican household where his parents first sparked his interest in hip-hop. For several years he commuted back into the United States to attend classes before his family resettled in San Diego. An early and wide-ranging musical diet took shape through his older brother’s habit of amassing downloads and his own insatiable curiosity; by adolescence his listening spanned Jay-Z, Kanye West, N.E.R.D., Nirvana, and assorted indie-rock acts. Later discoveries of Bon Iver and Frank Ocean prompted him to begin composing, steering his work toward more exploratory territory. Alongside producer and songwriter Lecx Stacy he captured the 2019 debut EP Bad Sports, which contained the tracks “Bull Fighter” and “’90s Green Screen.”

Pixel Bath, his initial studio album, reached listeners in October 2020 and featured A$AP Rocky on “Triple Double.” Late the next year he joined Mac DeMarco for the collaborative cut “Menthol*.” Soon after came “Porn Acting*,” the lead single from sophomore effort Chaos Now*, whose rollout also included “3 Heads*” and “Pirate Radio*” ahead of the album’s October 2022 release. In 2023 the introspective SZA duet “No Szns” emerged. The following year saw the arrival of full-length Glimmer of God, which spotlighted appearances by Lil Yachty and BONES.
