Biography
South Korean vocalist and composer Kim Seok-jin, widely recognized by fans simply as Jin, has joined his BTS colleagues in shattering sales records and claiming global chart peaks. Parallel to those group efforts, he developed an individual path that began with featured solo moments on BTS projects, including the 2016 cut “Awake,” the 2018 piece “Epiphany,” and the 2020 track “Moon.” His first official solo single, “The Astronaut,” arrived in 2022 after he co-wrote it alongside Coldplay and Kygo. Two years afterward came his initial full-length album, Happy.
Jin entered the world in 1992 in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, and was brought into BTS as a vocalist in 2013. His expansive register, spanning a mellow, reassuring lower register to a bright falsetto, supplied emotional depth and warmth to the septet’s sound. Throughout the group’s Korean-, Japanese-, and English-language output, he shaped solo material featured on Wings (“Awake,” 2016), Love Yourself: Answer (“Epiphany,” 2018), and Map of the Soul: 7 (“Moon,” 2020). Beyond the band’s primary schedule, he partnered with fellow vocalist V on the piano-driven “It’s Definitely You” for the 2016 Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth soundtrack, and joined Jungkook and Suga on the latter’s “So Far Away” from the Agust D mixtape. Independently, Jin released the acoustic “Tonight” in 2019 and followed it with “Abyss” in 2020. The subsequent year he supplied the central theme “Yours” for the Jirisan drama series; later in 2021 the brief, energetic dance number “Super Tuna” unexpectedly became a viral phenomenon, triggering a social-media dance trend and dominating streaming-video rankings.
In 2022 Jin reunited with “My Universe” partners Coldplay and electronic artist Kygo for his first proper solo single, “The Astronaut,” a sweeping ode to love that incorporates vocals from Chris Martin. The track received its live premiere in Buenos Aires during one of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour dates that was streamed worldwide. Following completion of required military duties, he resurfaced in 2024 with the full-length Happy.
