Marquess, whose home base lay in Hanover, Germany, absorbed the rhythms and textures of modern Latin pop with notable intensity, even producing multiple original tracks entirely in Spanish. Fronting the ensemble was vocalist Sascha Pierro, a German native whose earlier collaborations included work with Patrick Nuo and Jazzkantine. In 2003, his composition “Wenn Grenzen” advanced as a contender for the Eurovision Song Contest. Pierro launched Marquess in early 2006 alongside guitarist Dominik Decker, bassist Marco Heggen, and keyboardist Christian Fleps. The quartet’s debut single on Warner Music, “El Temperamento,” swiftly became one of Europe’s defining summer successes and reached the German Top Ten ahead of the self-titled album. The band followed with its second release, Frenetica, in 2007, which yielded the singles “Vayamos Companeros” and “You and Not Tokio.” Further productivity marked the next two years, bringing ¡YA! in 2008 and Compañía del Sol in 2009. Following a three-year break, the group resurfaced in 2012 with its fifth album, ¡Bienvenido!.
