Biography
Born in Sicily, Patrizia Laquidara spent her early years in Italy’s northern Veneto region. A 1998 scholarship allowed her to pursue Italian folk studies at composer Mogol’s CET school. The stylish vocalist, already an avid student of Brazilian and other South American traditions, introduced herself to audiences in 2001 with the Caetano Veloso tribute Para Você Querido Cae. The next year she collected the Critics, Best Performance, and Best Music prizes for “Agisce” at the Premio Città de Recanati festival. In 2003 she repeated that success in the newcomers’ category of the San Remo Festival, earning Best Song and Best Performance for “Lividi e Fiori.” She also issued her second album, Indirizzo Portoghese, now containing original Italian songs enriched by contributions from Fausto Mesolella of Avion Travel, Javier Girotto of Aires Tango, Tony Canto of Arancia Sonora, and a duet with Mario Venuti on the hit “Per Causa d’Amore.” In 2005, alongside film composer Paolo Buonvino, she wrote “Noite e Luar,” the featured track for Giovanni Veronesi’s Manuale d’Amore. The film topped the Italian box office that year, and the Portuguese-language song solidified Laquidara’s standing as a cosmopolitan, sophisticated singer-songwriter comparable to Carla Bruni or Carmen Consoli, yet distinguished by a sensual South American accent that her own languorous beauty further underscored. Her third album, Funambola, appeared in 2007, having been recorded in the United States and produced by Arto Lindsay.
