Biography
Formed as doom metal rockers in 1990, Penance issued their initial underground demo upon assembling. Circulation through tape-trading networks eventually reached the members of Cathedral, whose enthusiasm led them to recruit Mike Smail—the group’s sole permanent participant—to perform drums on Cathedral’s debut album. Penance endured as a unit and delivered their first full-length, The Road Less Traveled, through Cathedral frontman Lee Dorrian’s Rise Above Records in 1992. The release stirred excitement in the metal underground, earning the band a contract with Century Media in 1994. Parallel Corners appeared the same year, yet repeated lineup shifts prompted the label to drop them. Frontman Briant Balich entered in 1997, and the ensemble sustained live activity along with further demo releases until securing a deal with Martyr Music Group in 2001. The resulting album, Alpha and Omega, surfaced the following spring.
