The Los Angeles trio PTAF shattered preconceptions tied to teen rap by arriving with multiple singles marked by memorable refrains, vibrant youthfulness, combative posture, and phrasing that earlier hip-hop acts might have seen result in school suspension. Kandii, K Duceyyy, and Alizé first united to create PTAF during their time at L.A.'s Crenshaw High School in 2012, with the acronym standing for "Pretty Taking All Fades," otherwise rendered as "Pretty, but willing to fight back." Their opening release, "Bad Ass Bitch," rapidly spread across video-sharing platforms through its ratchet rap demeanor and dance-floor-ready refrain, while 2013 tracks including "Do Yo Shit" and "Grimy Nigga" supplied additional sing-along choruses whose content remained unfit for polite audiences. Also during 2013, a bootleg upload of "Bad Ass Bitch" to commercial outlets prompted the trio to issue the single officially, and an unsanctioned remix from Nicki Minaj prompted Capitol Records to offer the group a contract. Their defiant posture and explicit wording formed only one facet of the PTAF narrative, as the members entered 2014 simultaneously as major-label artists and as high-school graduates.
