Rainey Qualley, who performs her pop material under the name Rainsford, works as a singer, songwriter, and actress. She entered the world in New York City before spending her childhood in Missoula, Montana, and Asheville, North Carolina. Her parents are the former model Paul Qualley and the model-actress Andie MacDowell; her sibling is the actress Margaret Qualley, known for Palo Alto and The Nice Guys. While dividing her early adulthood between Los Angeles and Nashville to pursue parallel paths in film and music, she secured her first substantial screen part in the 2012 comedy-drama Mighty Fine, portraying the daughter of characters played by Chazz Palminteri and her own mother. Additional early credits include the 2014 short Pink & Baby Blue and a starring turn that same year in the contemporary western Falcon Song. In 2015 she appeared as a model during the final season of the award-winning cable series Mad Men.

Her initial music release, the seven-track country project Turn Down the Lights, came out on Cingle Records in June 2015. Produced in Nashville by Russ Zavitson, whose past collaborators include Billy Ray Cyrus and the Wilkinsons, along with songwriter John Ramey, who had worked with Tracy Byrd and Don Williams, the set showcased a range of country-pop styles. After departing Nashville the following year, she resurfaced as Rainsford with the sultry electropop single “S.I.D. (Sunshine in December),” whose vocal approach aligned with R&B-inflected pop. The similar track “Too Close” arrived in fall 2016. Throughout this period she maintained her modeling and acting work under her given name, including a lead role in the 2016 short No Other Like You, while readying an introductory Rainsford EP.
