Rare Americans emerged from Vancouver as a high-spirited ensemble drawn to dramatic presentation, achieving widespread online attention through their eclectic indie pop-punk tracks such as “Cats, Dogs & Rats” and “Brittle Bones Nicky.” Fronted by siblings James and Jared Priestner, the industrious outfit has issued multiple independent projects, among them their 2018 self-titled debut along with the narrative-driven LPs Jamesy Boy & the Screw Loose Zoo (2021) and Searching for Strawberries: The Story of Jongo Bongo (2023). Their vivid visual style is evident in the animated clips that accompany most releases and reinforce each album’s conceptual thread, as demonstrated on 2024’s The Human Animal.

The group’s formation began almost playfully during a 2018 getaway to the Caribbean, where the Priestner brothers impulsively challenged themselves to compose a full record. Once back in Canada they completed the debut album in ten days alongside collaborator Lubo Ivan. Blending pop-punk drive with rap, funk, pop, punk, and additional flavors, the self-titled set gained streaming traction largely through the buoyant, ska-inflected “Cats, Dogs & Rats,” while the 2019 follow-up single “Brittle Bones Nicky” surpassed it by accumulating millions of plays.

At that stage Rare Americans had grown into a six-member lineup via the arrivals of Jan Cajka, Duran Ritz, and Ginger Chen, resulting in the early-2021 release Rare Americans 2. Maintaining their rapid creative pace, the band delivered their third effort, Jamesy Boy & the Screw Loose Zoo, later the same year, complete with an animated video that expanded its storyline. Subsequent annual projects followed: 2022’s You’re Not a Bad Person, the 2023 concept album Searching for Strawberries: The Story of Jongo Bongo, and 2024’s The Human Animal.
