Rei Ami, a Korean-born singer and producer working in alternative pop with rap woven into her provocative material, first gained traction in 2019 through early releases such as "DICTATOR" and "MAKE IT MINE." She gained wider attention via a featured turn on Sub Urban's "Freak" and kept issuing her own shadowy, experimental pop while preparing her 2021 debut album Foil. The even more unconventional shhh EP arrived in 2023, organized around motifs of violence and crime.

Born in Seoul, she relocated to the United States with her family at age six. In a strict Christian home she began with piano and guitar, her parents funding lessons so she could play at church. Although secular music was forbidden there, the restriction prompted her to absorb an eclectic array of influences stretching from Britney Spears to Luther Vandross.

After "Trippin Toddlers" spread widely on video platforms, the 24-year-old vocalist entered the industry with the 2019 single "MAKE IT MINE," fusing ominous bedroom pop with synth-funk, trap, and other styles. Its lyrics, steeped in gloom and centered on relationships and revenge, also displayed her vocal flexibility across sultry singing, husky rapping, and PC Music-style processing. Later that year she added "SNOWCONE" and "DICTATOR," both extending her range across rapidly changing genres. She appeared on Sub Urban's 2020 hit "Freak," then issued her own 2021 single "do it right" featuring Anime, which featured on her debut album Foil and included a collaboration with Lolo Zouaï.

Headlined by tracks such as "yellow tape" and "body bag," the dramatic, crime-themed shhh EP followed in November 2023. A month later she joined the Dillon Francis mixtape This Mixtape Is Fire TOO.
