Ren blends rapid-fire rap verses, confessional songwriting, and classic folk narration into tracks that shift between genres while moving from private reflection to surreal imagery and broad emotional resonance. Health complications and psychological challenges entered his life at a young age, regularly surfacing as central subjects across his recordings. The 2022 single “Hi Ren” went viral by perfectly illustrating his patchwork approach, and the momentum from that track carried into further stylistic explorations on the 2023 album Sick Boi.

Born Ren Gill in Wales in 1990, he relocated to Bath during his late teens to pursue music studies at Bath Spa University. After performing with several groups, he drew the attention of veteran musician Eric Appapoulay through solo busking performances. A 2010 Sony deal took him to London alongside Appapoulay for recording sessions, yet worsening illness forced a return to Wales. Over the following years he managed ongoing health concerns that frequently confined him to bed, where he continued writing and producing material. His first album, Freckled Angels, appeared as a self-released project in 2016.

Following that debut, Ren maintained a steady output of new material through YouTube videos, standalone singles, the story-driven 2019 EP The Tale of Jenny & Screech, and a series of 2020 mixtape-style demo collections. Breakthrough arrived in December 2022 with the expansive autobiographical single “Hi Ren,” whose video adopted a somber visual tone to match its themes of inner conflict and quickly accumulated millions of views. The track exposed wider audiences to his contrasting songwriting methods, prompting continued releases and rising recognition throughout 2023. October saw the arrival of his second album Sick Boi, supported by several successful preceding tracks; it reached number one on both the U.K. and Scottish album charts and entered the Billboard 200.
