Biography
Salt Tank demonstrates a talent for crafting elegant techno and trance reminiscent of Orbital, yet their emphasis on aggressive techno rhythms alongside energetic stage presentations featuring guitars, drum kits, and banks of synthesizers aligns them more closely with Underworld. Malcolm Stanners and David Gates established the group, later incorporating Andrew Rose to strengthen their concert presence, and issued multiple singles prior to inking a deal with Internal Records, where they achieved an unexpected British Top 40 placement with "Eugina." Stanners and Gates had known one another since childhood, bonded by mutual interests in world music and the crusty festival scene. They also adopted acid-house sounds by the mid-'80s, during which time Stanners took a position at Paradise Studio engineering sessions for Hawkwind, the Beloved, Kevin Saunderson's Inner City, and Derrick May.
In 1991 the pair used accumulated funds to purchase equipment and cut three limited EPs for their own 4 Real Communications imprint. These recordings generated considerable interest within dance circles after being featured in mixes by Andrew Weatherall and Kris Needs, while also receiving airplay on The John Peel Show. Upon joining Internal Records, home to Orbital and the Advent, the duo delivered their first full-length album, Science and Nature. The single "Eugina" reached the British Top 40, prompting the addition of Andrew Rose as a frontman for live performances. Salt Tank's second album, Wavebreaks, appeared in 1997, and the trio became one of the rare acts to deliver a live set at the Liverpool super-club Cream.
