Emerging from Kingston, Jamaica, Samantha J crafts a blend of pop and R&B infused with reggae and dancehall elements. Samantha Gonsalves came into the world there during 1996, and an Ocho Rios-based talent agency first spotted her, paving the way for her initial foray into modeling. By 2013, she had uploaded a YouTube audio version of her track "Tight Skirt," incorporating a sample from Red Rat's 1997 dancehall recording "Tight Up Skirt." This release rapidly gained traction, amassing more than 15,000 online views. Shortly thereafter, a proper music video for the same song made its way onto the internet. The year 2015 saw the arrival of two additional singles, namely "Bad Like Yuh" alongside "League of My Own" which included a feature from Dej Loaf. She teamed up the following year with the Norwegian pop act Marcus & Martinus on the song "Light it Up." J resumed her individual output in 2017 via the release of "Baby Love" that featured R. City.
