Biography
Shungudzo fuses stylized contemporary R&B, hip-hop, alt-rock, and dance-pop across tracks that frequently address social issues. The project belongs to Alexandra Shungudzo Govere, a singer, songwriter, producer, and philanthropist whose first official release, the protest song “Long Live the Billionaire,” appeared in 2017.
Although born in the United States, Govere grew up in Zimbabwe, where at five she pledged to compose one poem daily for the remainder of her life. Beyond her early literary drive, she trained as a ballet dancer and gymnast, earning a spot on the Zimbabwe National Gymnastics Team while still a preteen. At the 1999 All-Africa Games she became the first Black female gymnast to compete for Zimbabwe. Academically gifted as well, she tackled high-school coursework at ten and, around the same period, co-founded an international nonprofit with her sister to support AIDS orphans. She finished secondary school at fourteen. While pursuing engineering studies at Stanford University in her mid-teens, she decided to adapt her poetry into songs and purchased a keyboard and microphone using textbook funds; soon afterward she began posting the resulting tracks on social media.
In 2011 she joined the cast of MTV’s The Real World: San Diego and remained at the network as a writer and correspondent for socially oriented initiatives such as MTV Act and MTV Voices. She later moved to the media firm RYOT, serving there as Editor-in-Chief and Director of Social Media.
As a recording artist she supplied vocals to Jim James’s 2016 album Eternally Even and, over the following months, co-wrote material for Louisa Johnson and Little Mix. By then dividing her time between Los Angeles and London and issuing music under the name Shungudzo, she issued “Long Live the Billionaire” as her debut single in 2017. Early in 2018 “Come on Back” landed on the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack, and she appeared on Paul White’s “Spare Gold.” Later that year she released the single “Paper” and joined EDM producer Oliver Heldens on “Fire in My Soul.” In 2019 she contributed a featured performance to Rudimental’s album Toast to Our Difference.
