A smooth, soulful voice that drew attention both prior to and amid the COVID-19 pandemic, LOONY has established herself as a standout in Canadian R&B through multiple acclaimed EPs that highlight her vocal range. Born Kira Huszar in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, she embraced her suburban upbringing by hosting industry showcases at local bars to attract label interest. Following the 2018 launch of her debut single “A Small Flame,” she began working with songwriter and producer Akeel Henry, a protege of Noah “40” Shebib, who is best known for his contributions to Drake’s projects. The tracks “Some Kinda Love” and “GOOD GAME” gained traction in 2019 and 2020, respectively, with the former earning a nomination for a SOCAN Songwriting award in Canada. Elton John further spotlighted her music by expressing admiration for it on his Rocket Hour radio program. Her first EP, JOYRiDE, arrived just one month after pandemic lockdowns began, yet she pressed forward by securing a rehearsal space with her band and key collaborators to continue creating under restrictive conditions. This effort yielded the 2021 follow-up EP soft thing, which was promoted through long-awaited North American live performances and earned a spot on the longlist for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize. Between 2023 and 2024 she issued the singles “Old Friends,” “A Good Night,” “Too Attached,” and “Counting Thunder,” all of which appeared on her self-titled debut album released that same year.
