Biography
With an unyielding forward thrust, the transatlantic outfit Split Cranium honors the raw blast of foundational hardcore and metal while folding in layers of ambient noise and spoken-word passages. Its roster draws an all-star lineup from an array of elite heavy-music outfits that include Circle, Converge, and Isis, among others. Launched in 2011 by guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner (Isis, Sumac, and Old Man Gloom), guitarist Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle), bassist Jukka Kröger, and drummer Samae Koskinen, the ensemble barrels through material that channels Motörhead’s amphetamine-charged abandon with sweat-drenched force. Split Cranium issued its first full-length statement in 2012 via the self-titled album on Turner’s Hydrahead imprint. After multiple lineup shifts, the collective returned to the studio to record its sophomore effort. Issued in 2018 on Ipecac, I’m the Devil and I’m OK presented the revised configuration of Turner, Lehtisalo, keyboardist/vocalist Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer, Mara), bassist Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders), and drummer Tomi Leppänen (Circle, K-X-P).
