Biography
System emerged as an experimental endeavor steeped in dub, formed by the Danish electronic artists Thomas Knak, Anders Remmer, and Jesper Skaaning, who had already built reputations crafting frosty, suave downtempo under the Future 3 name. Their initial outing arrived in 2002 as a self-titled album issued through Stefan Betke’s ~scape imprint. The musicians later revived the project at irregular intervals across subsequent decades, culminating in the 2018 full-length Plus, which featured pianist Nils Frahm as a collaborator.
Their partnership originated in the mid-’90s through Future 3, whose output typically featured luminous keyboard lines and relaxed yet intricate rhythms submerged beneath dense layers of reverb. A selection of early recordings appeared on Copenhagen’s April Records, among them the drum’n’bass-tinged 1996 single “The Boy from West Bronx,” which found underground traction. Departing from that approach, the trio unveiled System in 2002 on ~scape, the label operated by Stefan Betke; the record pursued a splintered, glitch-oriented aesthetic saturated with dub textures reminiscent of Betke’s own respected Pole material. Though it received less attention than ~scape releases by Jan Jelinek and Kit Clayton, it later earned recognition as a concealed treasure within experimental dub and IDM circles.
Once the album appeared, the three continued with separate ventures, notably Skaaning’s Acustic and Remmer’s Dub Tractor. They reconvened under the System banner for the 2007 EP Tempo, a markedly lighter release on Rump Recordings. That same year also saw the debut of their glitch-pop side project People Press Play alongside vocalist Sara Savery. System’s follow-up album B surfaced in 2010, refining the debut’s blueprint with traces of dubstep and a modestly stronger melodic focus; the B Remixes EP arrived the following year.
After Future 3 finally issued its fourth album in 2014, the musicians began collaborating with Nils Frahm, an admirer of the original System record. Although they initially considered returning to the glitch-dense palette of that debut, Frahm’s piano steered the sessions toward a spare, ambient direction. Released in 2018 on Morr Music—the same label that had issued prior Future 3 and People Press Play material—Plus marked the project’s third long-player.
