In the early 2000s the Newark, Delaware-based Crash Motive emerged with a sound fusing commercial pop/rock and R&B modeled after Maroon 5. Derek Fuhrmann, who handled vocals and guitar, first tapped into Napster’s file-sharing possibilities as a freshman at the University of Delaware. The sudden access to Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin inspired him to pick up the guitar and recruit players with greater experience than his own. Jaime Orlando, handling keyboards, was the initial respondent, after which Josh Berger on bass, Tyler Ingersoll on drums, and Shawn Manigly on guitar completed the lineup. The group originally performed as Omnisoul before switching to Crash Motive in summer 2007. They swiftly attracted local attention by winning a university-wide Battle of the Bands contest and by holding the top request slot at WSTW, Delaware’s Top 40 station, for an unprecedented 29 consecutive nights. That exposure centered on the track “Waiting (Save Your Life),” which later appeared in the action film Fantastic 4. By then the band’s reach had grown well beyond campus limits, prompting Wind-Up Records to pair them with producer Don Gilmore—previously linked to Linkin Park and Dashboard Confessional—for recording sessions in spring 2007. The resulting major-label debut, Consequence, arrived the following October on the Wind-Up imprint.
