Sharing the Capricorn roster alongside Sonia Dada and Rusted Root, Vigilantes of Love fused blues, gospel, folk-rock, and country-rock. The ensemble originated in Athens, Georgia, in 1990, with chief songwriter Bill Mallonee delivering vocals and acoustic guitars, Newton Carter supplying electric guitars and backing vocals, David LaBruyere on bass, and Travis Aaron McNabb handling drums and percussion. It started as an acoustic duo limited to Mallonee and an accordionist; after two independent duo albums, Mallonee recruited additional Athens-area band veterans to adopt an electric approach. Following two more indie releases, the band secured a Capricorn contract that yielded 1994’s Welcome to Struggleville and 1995’s Blister Soul. After issuing V.O.L. in 1996, the group resurfaced the next year with Slow Dark Train. Cross the Big Pond arrived in 1999, and Vigilantes of Love released Audible Sigh in 2000.
