Biography
Derek Webb operates within the stylistically restrained world of contemporary Christian pop yet brings an instigator’s temperament and a taste for provocation to his work as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. These traits allow him to provoke reflection on subjects of real consequence through his recordings. Born May 27, 1974, in Memphis, Tennessee, he completed his secondary education in Texas and helped establish the Houston-based Christian pop ensemble Caedmon’s Call at its formation in 1993. He stayed with the band across multiple releases before departing for a solo career in 2003. That year saw the arrival of his debut album, She Must and Shall Go Free, which showcased an independent and unyielding stance toward Christian music and sparked extensive critical debate. His second studio album, I See Things Upside Down, appeared in 2004, accompanied by the live recording The House Show. The well-regarded Mockingbird followed in 2005, paired with the concert DVD How to Kill and Be Killed. In 2007 Webb issued the acoustic and remixed sets One Zero (Acoustic) and One Zero (Remix), each revisiting earlier material, as well as his fourth studio album, The Ringing Bell. Stockholm Syndrome arrived in 2009. He is married to singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken and resides in Nashville.
