Born and raised in Texas within a family steeped in church traditions and featuring multiple pastors among its members, Robbie Seay earned critical praise on the contemporary Christian music circuit. During his final year of high school, his older brother Chris Seay, then a Baylor University student in Waco, Texas, took the role of pastor at University Baptist Church and asked Robbie to join its music ministry. There Robbie shared performances with David Crowder, who later gained recognition as a Christian rock artist, and discovered his vocation in worship songs that also explored questions of faith amid modern life.

Following graduation Robbie enrolled at Baylor himself; once he completed his studies he relocated to Houston, where Chris served as teaching pastor at Ecclesia, a community its founders characterized as “a holistic missional Christian community” that housed a coffeehouse, recording studio, homeless outreach center, and worship space. In 1997 Robbie Seay assembled a band that played regularly at the coffeehouse and during Ecclesia’s Sunday services, with Seay handling lead vocals and guitar, Dan Hamilton on drums, Taylor Johnson on guitar, and Seth Woods on bass. The Robbie Seay Band issued its self-titled debut EP that same year, followed by the full-length album Thoughts of You in 1999.

Several years afterward, close friend Ryan Owen assumed bass duties from Seth Woods, Taylor Johnson departed, and Chase Jenkins joined on keyboards. Building on the momentum of the independently issued albums 10,000 Charms (2002), Live (2003), and Better Days (2004), supported by extensive Southwest touring, the group secured a contract with Sparrow Records, which issued an updated version of Better Days in 2005.

Seay and his band delivered their second Sparrow full-length, Give Yourself Away, in 2007; the project featured the track “Song of Hope (Heaven Come Down),” which received substantial Christian radio exposure and climbed into the Top Ten of Billboard’s Top Christian Songs chart. In 2010 the Robbie Seay Band released Miracle, an album that registered modestly on the lower reaches of the Billboard Top 200. The following year the group returned to independent status with Rich & Poor. November 2013 brought Psalms, Vol. 1, the initial installment in a series of EPs containing Seay’s adaptations of passages from the Book of Psalms. After a crowdfunding campaign financed the first volume, two additional EPs appeared in 2014, and all three were later compiled as the album Psalms in 2015. Outside of touring and recording, Seay and his bandmates create music and lead worship at Bayou City Fellowship in Houston, Texas.
