Eschewing nearly all biographical details, rapper Tokyo's Revenge materialized without warning in 2018, unleashing an abrasive, heavily processed sound that evoked the late XXXTentacion for many listeners. His first release, “GOODMORNINGTOKYO!,” quickly gained viral traction thanks to Cliiifford’s blown-out production and the artist’s fluid, adaptable delivery, eventually accumulating tens of millions of streams.
Tokyo’s Revenge began posting music online that same year while withholding his legal name, age, hometown, and every other conventional identifier. Once “GOODMORNINGTOKYO!” propelled him to prominence in 2019, he explained in interviews that the decision to remain unidentified was deliberate, allowing audiences to engage with the work free of geographic or scene-based preconceptions. Despite the veil of anonymity, the tracks continued to rack up plays; his follow-up single “THOT!” soon matched that momentum by surpassing ten million streams. Alongside those breakout cuts and the two EPs Mdnght (Side A) and Mdnght (Side B), he joined Joey Trap for the 2019 mixtape Trapped in Tokyo. Several 2020 singles, among them the Kid LAROI collaboration “Hell Bent,” paved the way for the subsequent EP 7VEN.
