The origins of Until June's warm pop/rock sound, distinguished by its prominent piano, trace back to Phoenix, where siblings Josh Ballard on vocals and piano alongside his brother Dan Ballard on guitar first began composing material during their high school years. Drawing from artists such as Ben Folds and Coldplay, and separated by only a narrow age gap, the pair sustained their creative partnership through college at Arizona State University while cycling through multiple bassists and drummers. Their debut EP arrived in 2000, and the brothers promoted it vigorously both in local venues and via widespread mailings, which prompted interest from a major label. Although the opportunity yielded no concrete results, it reinforced their belief in the material and prompted a full commitment to music. The Ballards relocated to Los Angeles, yet several years of persistent gigs, aggressive self-promotion, and interim employment produced little tangible progress. With time running out, drummer Daniel Dempsey joined in April 2005 to finalize the lineup. The group imposed its own cutoff—securing a contract by June or disbanding—which also inspired the band name. As that deadline approached, Until June signed with the Tennessee-based Christian imprint Flicker Records, soon acquired as a Sony/BMG subsidiary. A three-song EP paved the way for the self-titled debut album released in April 2007.
