Biography
Venom Prison, a Welsh death metal quintet, is fronted by Russia-born vocalist Larissa Stupar, a cultural and political firebrand who steers the band away from the genre’s ingrained misogyny toward themes of empowerment and catharsis. The group surfaced in 2016 via the uncompromising Animus, then secured a deal with Century Media before unveiling its fourth LP, Erebos, in 2022.
Stupar, who describes herself as a vegan straight-edge anarchist, started the band in 2014 after exiting the German hardcore outfit Wolf Down. The musicians fuse a lethal mix of breakdowns and blastbeats, and the lineup also comprises guitarists Ben Thomas and Ash Gray (ex-Brutality Will Prevail), bassist Mike Jefferies, and drummer Jay Pipprell (Ninkharsag, ex-Unsanctum). They introduced their modernist deathcore approach on the Primal Chaos EP in 2015, signed with Prosthetic Records the next year, and delivered their full-length debut, Animus.
Venom Prison followed with the uncompromising Samsara in 2019, then issued Primeval, a set of re-recorded early material, one year later. After inking a fresh contract with Century Media in 2020, the label released the band’s fourth long-player, Erebos, in 2022.
