Josh Smith fuses his affinities for electronic dance music, hip-hop, and indie rock under the versatile banner of Yoshi Flower. The project issued the mixtape American Raver in 2018, followed in 2019 by Peer Pleasure and I Will Not Let My Love Go to Waste, before issuing multiple singles throughout 2021, among them "Faking Sleep."

Previously half of Detroit duo Gosh Pith alongside Josh Freed, Smith introduced Yoshi Flower in March 2018 through the electro-pop cut "Movies," which casts his romantic interest as the lead of his own cinematic narrative. That same week brought Elohim's release of "Panic Attacks" featuring Yoshi Flower, which in turn launched a run of live dates opening Elohim's North American tour. After signing with Interscope, Yoshi Flower delivered the debut mixtape American Raver in October 2018. A subsequent North American tour with rapper Skizzy Mars preceded the June 2019 arrival of another mixtape, Peer Pleasure, with I Will Not Let My Love Go to Waste appearing that December.

Having begun sessions for a debut album in 2020, Yoshi Flower resurfaced in 2021 via singles that included "Faking Sleep" (b/w a cover of the Cure's "Boys Don't Cry") and "Slow Dance/I Don't Wanna Do This Anymore."
