Sony executives originated the concept of 4Troops and contacted Victor Hurtado, who had long overseen and coordinated entertainment and music productions for the U.S. Army, to recruit a vocal quartet of veterans capable of touring in support of veterans' causes. Hurtado selected Meredith Melcher, a platoon leader who served in Iraq in 2003, Ron Henry, a former transport manager in Iraq, David Clemo, who placed fiber-optic cables in Iraq, and Daniel Jens, a field artillery crewman in Iraq, to form the ensemble. The resulting quartet quickly drew favorable media notice and began tracking its first album with producer Frank Filipetti in New York. Masterworks issued the self-titled collection 4Troops in 2010.
