Biography
7 Sons of Soul infuse gospel with a fresh perspective by fusing modern urban influences and longstanding quartet conventions. The ensemble came together in Washington, D.C., after Cliff Jones and Deonte Gray finished tracking the song "Run On" and chose to build a complete unit capable of delivering a full-length project. They brought in Dave "DaveyBoy" Lindsey along with Paul "Buggy" Edwards on drums, keyboardist Sam Kendrick, and bassist Nathaniel Fields. Lindsey handled the bulk of the songwriting and production, resulting in a 14-track set that moved across traditional and contemporary gospel while occasionally adopting a straight R&B feel without introducing any secular material. Verity Records released the album exactly as submitted in 2004 under the title 7 Sons of Soul, and it rose to number 24 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. The follow-up, Witness, appeared on the Zomba label in 2007 and likewise registered on the gospel chart.
Although most members remained active in the wider music business, the group itself issued no new material for several years beyond scattered appearances on gospel and Christmas compilations and occasional live dates, including a 2010 Kennedy Center concert with Maggie Ingram & the Ingramettes. New music finally surfaced with the 2014 track "Run," followed by the single "High & Mighty" in January 2016 and word of a forthcoming album. By then Fields and Kendrick had left, with Ronnie Lindsey taking over on bass; later non-original members included Kenneth Epperson, Eric Graham, and Matthew Tucker.
