Chilean singer-songwriter Alberto Plaza has seen his romantic compositions disseminated across Latin America from the mid-1980s onward. During studies at a local university, he discovered a deep inclination toward both music and poetry. Plaza earned third position at Viña del Mar's Festival in 1985 with "Que Cante La Vida." Issued the same year, his debut record reached platinum certification in Chile, after which its tracks received interpretations from Latin artists such as Valeria Lynch, Carlos Mata, Myriam Hernández, and Nydia Caro. En La Escalera arrived in 1987 and Blanco y Negro followed in 1989, each attaining double platinum status. Early in the 1990s Alberto Plaza began appearing on major television programs, where he gained Latin Star recognition on Don Francisco's Sabado Gigante, Verónica Castro's La Movida, and Raúl Velasco's Siempre en Domingo. He subsequently took second place at the OTI Festival with "Canción Contra La Tristeza." In February 2000 the same song, "Que Cante La Vida," was selected as the Best Chilean Song Ever at Festival de Viña del Mar.
