Brite Futures, the electro-pop ensemble previously operating as Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, approaches its material with an irreverent flourish. Luke Smith and Shaun Libman launched the project in 2005 while enrolled at Seattle’s Center School, an institution centered on the arts, limiting themselves at first to the keyboards and drum machines they could already handle. David Price, who covers keyboard, guitar, and vocals, and Claire England, responsible for vocals, bass, and keyboard, both fellow Center School students, entered the lineup by December, the same month the band delivered its initial prominent show at the launch of 826seattle; Liam Downey Jr. arrived shortly thereafter on drums. The group’s appearance at the Seattle arts and music festival Bumbershoot in fall 2007, paired with a Spin feature, expanded its visibility. The following summer the band issued its first full-length album, Glistening Pleasure, on the independent Team Swam imprint while supporting CSS, the Go! Team, and Matt & Kim on the road. In mid-2010 the members adopted the name Brite Futures, declaring the prior moniker obsolete and marking the shift with a tongue-in-cheek video tribute to Natalie Portman. Their debut release under the new name, the album Dark Past, appeared in September 2011.
