Biography
Casper Magico emerged as a Puerto Rican singer-rapper and a leading voice in the Trap Latino strand of reggaeton. Mentored by Anuel AA, with whom he recorded during an early phase of his career, he first drew widespread notice in February 2017 via the single “No Me Hables de Amor,” which featured Anuel AA and whose video quickly surpassed two million views. While Anuel AA served time in prison, Magico acted as his public representative; in return, Anuel AA sent recording guidance through letters. The track also registered in the Top Ten on the Latin charts maintained by multiple streaming platforms. Issued concurrently, “Te Perdí” featuring Kendo Kaponi failed to match that performance. The June follow-up “Cuentale,” again with Anuel AA, reversed the trend and restored Magico to prominent chart positions.
Magico has kept most personal history deliberately opaque. Born Julio Cruz García, he navigated street life before music became his refuge. After the breakthrough release, he uploaded nearly every new recording to YouTube, each accumulating at least 140,000 views. March brought the hit single “Por Dinero,” later remixed with Kendo Kaponi, Miky Woodz, and Noriel. In December, the collaboration “Te Boté” with Nio Garcia and Darell prompted two 2018 reinterpretations: the Te Bote: Electrónica Remixes EP and a full remix single that added Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam, and Ozuna. The latter version achieved major success, dominating Latin urban and pop charts while its video tallied 300,000 views in the first three weeks; ultimately it reached number one in eleven countries and cracked the U.S. Top 40.
In May 2018 Magico joined Ele a el Dominio, Jamby el Favo, John Jay, and producer Sinfonico on the remix of Darell’s “Blanco Yo Negro.” That same month the “Te Boté” remix ascended to the summit of the Hot Latin Songs chart. Although Magico released six further singles during 2018, none replicated that level of impact. The following year brought renewed momentum. “No Te Veo (Remix)” with Anuel AA reached the Top 30 in Spain, the Top 40 in the Dominican Republic, and entered the U.S. Hot 100. The “Mírame” remix, which enlisted Garcia, Rauw Alejandro, Lenny Tavárez, Myke Towers, and Darell, landed inside the Top 20 across fifteen countries. “La Jeepeta,” featuring Anuel AA, Myke Towers, Brray, and Juanka, peaked at number four.
These three tracks, together with the “Te Boté” remix, appeared on Now or Never, the first collaborative album by Garcia and Magico, released in late July. The eighteen-song project contained additional contributions from Arcángel and De La Ghetto on “No Se Te Dio,” Jowell & Randy on “Farandula,” and Darell on “Llame Pa Verte,” among others. Early August saw the set debut at number five on the Top Latin Albums chart, number four on the Latin Rhythm Albums list, and number 136 on the Billboard 200. Shortly afterward, the duo joined Flow La Movie for “Travesuras,” which spent more than twenty weeks on the Top Latin Songs chart, peaked at number nine, and topped Tropical Airplay. In February 2021 Magico and Flow La Movie released “Mi Favorita.” A month later, an all-star remix of “Travesuras” surpassed 200 million streams. Throughout 2021 Magico issued, co-produced, or appeared on a fresh single each month.
After the December drop of “Karma” featuring Flow La Movie and Bryant Myers, he fell silent for half a year. He resurfaced in June with “De Rumba,” whose video exceeded 200 million views, and followed in October with the single “La Mini” alongside Young Miko.
