Biography
Upon earning her music degree from the Chilean Catholic University, Cecilia Echenique relocated to England in 1979 with the goal of refining her abilities as an instrumentalist. Once back in Chile, she established the children-focused vocal ensemble Mazapán, aligned herself with the domestic Nueva Trova scene—likewise referred to as Canto Nuevo—and appeared onstage alongside Joan Baez and Roberto Bravo in Santiago de Chile. Her debut album appeared in 1987 and featured the track “Como La Cigarra,” a duet she cut with Argentinian singer Leon Gieco that quickly achieved widespread popularity. Cecilia Echenique traveled to the U.S. in 1995 for concerts at venues that included New York, Washington’s Kennedy Center, Illinois University at Chicago, and Princeton University in New Jersey. She joined the Universal roster in 1998 and issued a well-received collection of Christmas carols before the year ended.
