Hailing from New Jersey, post-hardcore unit Chasing Safety generates dense guitar riffs alongside soaring melodic lines and visceral screams that echo the approach of Beartooth and Underøath. The lineup first assembled in 2013 around vocalist Johnny Galivan, clean vocalist and bassist Kenny Davis, drummer Luke Genocide, and guitarists Steve Novoa and Derek Williams; at the outset they operated under the name Us, from Outside before adopting their present identity. Following a contract with Outerloop Records, they reissued their opening EP The Machine in the first months of 2014. Later that year the band issued its debut full-length, Season of the Dead, which Dan Korneff—previously at the boards for Pierce the Veil, the Devil Wears Prada, Motionless in White, and Crown the Empire—produced with Nick Sampson and which incorporated several outside contributors, among them Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas on the song “Listen Clearly.” Steve Novoa exited in 2015 and Patrick Hall stepped in on guitar. The next year, while the group continued to tour and track its follow-up, Derek Williams also departed, leaving Chasing Safety as a quartet that returned in 2017 with the sophomore album Nomad, again produced by Korneff and Sampson.
