The Reeves brothers—Pat, Doug, and Andy—craft rousing, arena-sized indie pop from their Manhattan base under the name Council. A VH1 rerun of Behind the Music centered on Oasis sparked their joint choice to leave college behind and launch the group, since they recognized their own dynamic in the Gallagher Brothers’ ongoing clashes. The siblings headed back to Baldwinsville, New York, where they worked their uncles’ farm to fund the purchase of instruments. Once equipped, they devoted evenings to rehearsal and songwriting. After logging road time, they advanced to EastWest Studios in Hollywood to record their debut EP with Grammy-nominated producer Justin Gray. Pat supplied lead vocals, bass, and keys; Andy handled guitar and backing vocals; and Doug played drums and backing vocals on the November 2016 release Rust to Gold. The motivational title track reached listeners abroad once it landed on streaming playlists assembled by curators. Five Seven Music signed the band in late 2017, after which the song secured placements by early 2018 with multiple European football leagues, including England’s Premier League, and with NBC for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, where it appeared in the opening ceremonies.
