James Clayton, an anti-folk misfit from Manchester, England, launched Crywank in 2009 as a solo outlet for emotional release. His early performances delivered sharp, confessional acoustic folk-punk reminiscent of Andrew Jackson Jihad, where themes of sadness, paranoia, misery, and dry humor defined the overall tone. Initial recordings circulated primarily through self-managed online channels without any physical formats. This independent approach allowed direct engagement with listeners and steadily expanded his audience. The unpolished debut album James Is Going to Die Soon arrived in September 2010. Two years afterward, in April, the follow-up Narcissist on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown appeared. Songs such as “Now I’m Sad (Boo Hoo)” and “It’s OK, I Wouldn’t Remember Me Either” revealed further layers of self-deprecating vulnerability that echoed a sardonic Bright Eyes. Eventually Clayton recruited drummer Dan “The Snail” Watson and bassist Tom “Knife” Connolly, forming a complete trio that shaped the third album, the anguished Tomorrow Is Nearly Yesterday and Everyday Is Stupid, issued in 2013; its popularity later prompted a physical edition in 2016. The expanded lineup produced a richer sonic palette that intensified the emotional weight of selections including “Only Everyone Can Judge Me” and “Waste.” Maintaining Clayton’s penchant for ironic wit, Crywank issued the playful Shameless Valentines Money Grab EP in 2014 to coincide with the holiday, while a few weeks afterward he also put out the Simpsons-inspired Following the Lizard Queen, written from the viewpoint of the show’s minor character Langdon Alger. The band’s fourth full-length, Don’t Piss on Me, I’m Already Dead, was scheduled for release the same year.
