A Juno Award-winning Canadian duo, Dear Rouge craft propulsive dance-rock driven by shimmering synth textures and expansive, hook-laden choruses. Their independently issued 2013 single “I Heard I Had” climbed Canadian radio playlists throughout 2014, prompting Universal to offer the band a recording contract. That momentum culminated in the 2016 Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year, earned on the strength of their 2015 major-label debut, Black to Gold. Subsequent alternative-radio successes such as “Live Through the Night,” taken from the 2018 album PHASES, and “Fake Fame,” from 2022’s Spirit, kept the pair in the spotlight, while festival appearances remained a constant; the new single “Goon” surfaced in early 2024.

The McTaggarts first crossed paths as touring musicians living in Vancouver: Drew performed with indie-rock outfit Maclean, and Danielle—then known as Heykants—formed one half of Gaetz Ave alongside Ben Mullen. After dissolving those prior commitments and marrying, the couple launched Dear Rouge with Danielle handling lead vocals. Their jagged, anthem-oriented aesthetic first appeared on the 2012 Heads Up! Watch Out! EP, followed later that year by Kids Wanna Know.

An unsigned Dear Rouge issued “I Heard I Had” near the end of 2013; the track began receiving airplay in 2014 and ultimately captured the SOCAN Songwriting Prize. Universal Canada then financed the band’s first full-length, Black to Gold, released in March 2015. Bolstered by the alternative singles “Black to Gold” and “Tongue,” the album earned the Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year in April 2016. One month later, Dear Rouge’s cover of the Hall & Oates classic served as the theme for the Jason Priestley–led Global series Private Eyes. Work on a sophomore LP soon followed, shaped by the duo’s encounters with both uplifting and harrowing personal milestones. PHASES arrived in 2018 and featured contributions from singer-songwriter Dan Mangan and Hot Hot Heat’s Steve Bays, with “Live Through the Night” emerging as its chief alternative-rock success. A deluxe edition appeared in 2019 while the band toured in support of Arkells.

Fresh singles, among them the alternative hit “Fake Fame,” preceded Dear Rouge’s third album in 2021. The completed Spirit, issued on Pheromone Recordings in April 2022, included a guest turn from Lights. Promotion encompassed Canadian support dates for Vance Joy, a run with Metric, and the group’s own headline shows. After retreating to the studio, the duo resurfaced with the single “Goon” in early 2024.
