Biography
Originating in Provo, Utah during 2011, the alt-rock group the Moth & the Flame consists of singer/guitarist Brandon Robbins, keyboardist Mark Garbett, and drummer Andrew Tolman, who had earlier performed with Imagine Dragons. Their self-titled debut appeared toward the end of that year and launched several seasons of road work that featured 2013 showcases at South by Southwest plus the Sundance Film Festival Café. Late in 2013 Hidden Records issued the Joey Waronker-produced EP &—Waronker’s résumé includes Atoms for Peace and Beck—while the band opened dates for Imagine Dragons and Neon Trees. Elektra Records signed them in fall 2014 and bassist Michael Goldman joined the lineup. Young & Unafraid, issued in 2016, was tracked with producers Peter Katis (the National, Jónsi), Tony Hoffer (Better Than Ezra, Belle and Sebastian), and Nate Pyfer (Fictionist, Parlor Hawk) and included string arrangements from Rob Moose (Renée Fleming, Alabama Shakes, the Decemberists). Now headquartered in Los Angeles and recognized for a sleek modern tone together with dynamic presence, the Moth & the Flame built a national profile through the 2013 EP and the major-label release, aided by extensive tours with Imagine Dragons and the Naked & Famous, before reuniting with Katis and Pyfer to record 2018’s Ruthless for Thirty Tigers.
