Biography
Multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy honors have come Draco Rosa's way for his work as a vocalist, composer, record producer, and player of many instruments. Hit singles and charting solo albums have marked his path ever since he first entered Menudo at age 14. Caribbean and Latin funk, hard rock, progressive pop, and additional styles appear throughout a body of work that moves freely between Latin and Anglo idioms, prompting critics to liken his chameleon-like approach to that of David Bowie and Prince. The experimental 1996 album Vagabundo stood as a landmark in Latin pop, whereas the sensual, chart-topping Mad Love of 2004 cemented his worldwide standing. Vida arrived in 2013 shortly after he completed treatment for his initial bout with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and featured sixteen reinterpreted catalog solo hits presented as duets with fellow artists he held in esteem. Monte Sagrado, issued in 2018 once he had again recovered from cancer therapy, emerged as a fiercely experimental rock set captured at the Phantom Vox farm studio on his Puerto Rican property. The thematically connected, digital-only Sound Healing 1:11 followed in 2021, succeeded by the live album Life After Vida in 2023. Reflejos de Lo Eterno reached stores as a new studio album in 2024.
Robert Edward Rosa Suárez entered the world on June 27, 1969, in Long Island, New York, yet spent his childhood in Peñuelas, Puerto Rico. Performance began early when he joined the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo in 1984. Credited then as Robby Rosa, he appeared on the group's first English-language effort, Reaching Out, and lent his voice to one of its major successes, "Sabes a Chocolate," prior to departing in 1987. Adopting the name Draco Rosa, he launched the brief English-language alternative rock outfit Maggie's Dream, whose self-titled album surfaced in 1990. His solo bow arrived with the rock en español album Frio in 1994 under the name Robi. A decisive shift occurred with Vagabundo in 1996, his first project issued as Robi Draco Rosa. Taped in England alongside Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, the ambitious concept album earned acclaim as a rock en español classic. Songbirds & Roosters appeared in 1998, offering English-language renditions of songs from Frio and Vagabundo, while Libertad del Alma, a compilation, followed in 2001. Recognition as a songwriter grew after "Livin' la Vida Loca," written for former Menudo colleague Ricky Martin, achieved global blockbuster status in 1999. Solo activity resumed with the English-language Mad Love and the Spanish-language compilation Como Me Acuerdo, both from 2004. Later releases encompass Draco al Natural, Ensayos al Natural, Vino, Teatro, and Amor Vincit Omnia.
Diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma near the liver occurred in April 2011, prompting treatment in Texas and California. While recuperating in 2012 he organized his subsequent album and entered the studio, in addition to sharing a sold-out soccer-stadium concert alongside Juan Luis Guerra and Rubén Blades. Declared cancer-free that December, he completed Vida, whose familiar song titles received radical rearrangement and fresh duet recordings with Latin music luminaries including Blades, Guerra, Shakira, Mana, Marc Anthony, Calle 13, and others. Released in March 2013, the album coincided with the disease's return; a second bone marrow transplant, recovery, and four-month quarantine preceded his 2017 stage return, where he performed Vagabundo in full along with additional career highlights. Vagabundo 22, a deluxe remastered edition marking the album's twenty-second anniversary and containing live bonus tracks from the celebratory tour, appeared the following year. Billboard later listed the original studio version among its "50 Greatest Latin Albums of the Last 50 Years."
Rosa stated at the time of Monte Sagrado's 2018 release that nine further songs already awaited recording; two additional tracks brought the total to eleven, all tracked at Phantom Vox, the facility he constructed on his 100-acre farm in Utuado's central mountain range of Puerto Rico. The self-produced set displayed a harder-rock experimentalism beyond any prior exploration. Lead single "333," accompanied by its self-directed video styled after classic Japanese animation, emerged in early October, and Monte Sagrado followed later that month through Sony, its artwork created by Rosa's son, the illustrator and visual artist Revel Rosa, ultimately topping the Latin Pop albums chart.
The single "Quiero Vivir," its words drawn from the late Mexican poet Jaime Sabines, appeared in late 2020, its electronic backdrop, measured tempo, and gentle harmonies signaling another stylistic turn. Sound Healing 1:11 arrived as a digital-only release in November 2021. Thematically joined to Monte Sagrado yet sonically distinct, the set incorporated experimental ambient textures, dub elements, and mystical lyrics across eleven tracks spanning one hour and eleven minutes, all captured at Phantom Vox. Rosa himself handled the bulk of instruments, vocals, and programming, while the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra supplied the orchestral arrangements. He also joined Natalia Lafourcade for a 2021 duet of "Blanca Mujer," a composition dating to 1996. "Eres," his cover of the 2004 Cafe Tacuba song from Mexico City, preceded the May 2024 album Reflejos de Lo Eterno.
