In 2004, guitarist Jack McGinty and bassist Teddy Feighan initiated their partnership by composing and performing material together in the suburbs of Cleveland, OH. Expanding to a full lineup, they enlisted vocalist Branden Langhals, drummer Zach Evans, keyboardist/vocalist Austin Bishop, and guitarist/vocalist Mikey Arnold, shaping the ensemble's "kinetically radiant rock" identity. Regional concerts gradually established a loyal local audience, which preceded the October 2006 release of the EP We Will Disappear. The project drew the attention of Chicago's Victory Records, prompting the sextet to sign with the label before year's end. Producer Sal Villanueva, known for his work with Taking Back Sunday and Thursday, helmed the band's debut full-length, The Very Air We Breathe, which arrived in May 2007 and incorporated several re-recorded selections from the earlier EP.
