Drawing from his gospel-music family's influence—most notably that of brother Cedric—singer/songwriter Duane Harden resolved to construct a personal studio for developing multiple projects. Moises Modesto came aboard in October 1997 to establish their production company together. During this period the aspiring performer was still enrolled at Boston University. MODU Productions introduced itself at the 1998 Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach.

Harden supplied vocals for Armand Van Helden's British chart-topping "U Don't Know Me." Powerhouse's "What You Need" appeared shortly afterward. Following remixes by Full Intention and Lenny Fontana, the electronica track climbed to number 13 on the U.K. Top 40.
