Following the August 2014 announcement of Danity Kane’s second disbandment, vocalists Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day established Dumblonde. Ex-Danity Kane colleague Dawn Richard kept pushing contemporary R&B toward unconventional territory, yet Bex and O’Day charted a comparable path within ordinary dance-pop. They collaborated with songwriter Candice Pillay and producer Dem Jointz—each of whom played key roles on Dr. Dre’s Compton—resulting in a self-titled album issued in September 2015. Although the tracks offered clear accessibility and abundant hooks, they appeared largely unconcerned with broad commercial appeal. Issued independently and distributed through Universal, the album still entered the Billboard 200 at number 129 and reached number three on the magazine’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
