Electronic emerged as one of the earliest supergroups in Britain’s post-punk era, an intermittent collaboration initiated by New Order’s Bernard Sumner alongside Johnny Marr, the Smiths’ onetime guitarist. In December 1989 the pair issued “Getting Away with It,” a track featuring joint vocals from Sumner and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys; the single narrowly bypassed the UK Top Ten, after which Electronic fell silent for more than two years while Sumner and Tennant resumed work with their primary bands and Marr contributed to recordings by The The and Billy Bragg.

The project’s second single, “Get the Message,” finally surfaced in April 1991, followed in June by the self-titled debut album. Just over a year afterward they released the standalone single “Disappointed.” Sumner subsequently rejoined New Order to complete the group’s sixth album, Republic, while Marr resumed his role as a session musician with both The The and the Pretenders. The duo reconvened, this time aided by Karl Bartos, formerly of Kraftwerk, and delivered Raise the Pressure in July 1996. After signing with Koch Records, Electronic unveiled their third album, Twisted Tenderness, four years later.
