Emerging in 2013, the Maltese folk-pop outfit Firelight centered on the creative input of songwriter and frontman Richard Edward Micallef. Hailing from a lineage steeped in performance, Micallef’s upbringing involved his father’s prominent status as a vocalist on the island, alongside his own early engagement with acoustic guitar, the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, and various percussion tools. His siblings joined the ensemble, with Michelle Mifsud handling piano duties and Daniel Micallef contributing acoustic guitar. The project’s origins trace back to Edward’s return from Britain, where he had featured in the 2005 series of The X-Factor and joined tours alongside the U.K. rock group Cast Away. Prior efforts to secure Malta’s Eurovision entry included stints with the Mics in both 2003 and 2005, followed by a solo bid in 2009, before Firelight earned the nod for the 2014 contest. Their rendition of the folk-pop track “Coming Home” yielded just 32 points, resulting in a 23rd-place finish, though a digital release managed to chart across the U.K., Austrian, German, and Irish Singles Charts.
